Universal Medical College Launches 15-Bed ICU, Marks 12 Years of Medical Education
Universal Medical College has launched a state-of-the-art 15-bed Critical Care Unit (ICU) to mark its 12th anniversary in medical education. At the same time, an orientation program was held for students of the MBBS 12th batch.
On Tuesday, 19 May, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated the new ICU unit at a grand ceremony held at Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka. He also declared the institution’s one-decade-plus milestone celebration open by releasing balloons and pigeons.
In his chief guest speech, he said that Universal Medical College is making significant contributions to medical education and modern healthcare services. He added that the new critical care unit will further strengthen emergency medical services in the country. He urged incoming students to become both humane and skilled doctors, expressing hope that the institution would move forward with the slogan: “MBBS + Humanity = Doctor”.
Special guests at the event included Engineer Md. Ashraf Uddin Bakul, Professor Dr. Mohammad Saiful Islam, Professor Dr. Nadim Ahmed, Engineer Dilip Kumar Pal, and Professor Dr. Uttam Kumar Pal.
The session was chaired by Priti Chakrabortty.
In the welcome address, Dr. Ashish Kumar Chakrabortty said that over its 12-year journey, the institution has been working to expand modern medical education and technology-driven healthcare services. He added that new initiatives will be taken in the future to ensure international-standard medical education and treatment.
Speaking on behalf of the faculty, Professor Dr. AKM Khalequzzaman Dipu emphasized the importance of technology-based education and skill development in modern healthcare systems.
On behalf of the new students, first-year MBBS student Ayman Akhtar and foreign student Shifa Deen shared their experiences and feelings.
Teachers, students, intern doctors, nursing faculty members, hospital officials, and media personnel were present at the event. The program was hosted by Shanta Jahan, while the chief coordinator was C. F. Zaman.
