U.S. tech giant Microsoft will invest $1 billion in cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Thailand over the next two years. The Thai government disclosed the information in a statement on Tuesday (31 March), reports Reuters.

As part of the investment, emphasis will be placed on enhancing the digital skills of the local workforce. This announcement marks another step by the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia toward accelerating the implementation of projects related to data centers, electronics, and power generation.

In recent months, major technology companies such as Amazon and Google have also announced increased investments in AI infrastructure across various Asian countries. Amazon has recently revealed plans for substantial investments in building data centers in India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, Google has announced the expansion of its cloud services in Singapore and Vietnam.

An official from Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society told Reuters that the investment would strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem and create new employment opportunities in the high-tech sector. However, Microsoft has not yet disclosed detailed information regarding the investment.
