Successful Kidney Transplant Performed at Bangladesh Medical University
A kidney transplant has been successfully carried out at Bangladesh Medical University in the capital. Following the surgery, the patient’s physical condition remained stable, and he was discharged from the hospital.
The patient, who had been admitted under the supervision of the Department of Nephrology, underwent the operation performed by the Department of Urology. The donor nephrectomy team was led by Professor Dr. Touhid Md. Saiful Islam Dipu, while the transplant surgery was conducted by Professor Dr. A K M Khurshidul Alam and Associate Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam.
The patient had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time and was fully dependent on dialysis. As the cost of treatment became increasingly difficult to bear, the family arranged for his admission to the hospital on 22 January of the current year. Based on the decision of a medical board, the kidney transplant was performed on 2 March.
The patient’s mother donated the kidney for the procedure. Following the successful surgery, both mother and child were reported to be in good health and were discharged from the hospital on 25 March.
Doctors noted that although the rate of kidney transplantation in the country remains lower than required, the availability of skilled professionals and advanced medical capabilities is steadily increasing. They expressed hope that such successful procedures will contribute positively to the expansion of advanced healthcare services in the country in the future.
