Engineers’ Iftar and Prayer Gathering Held at IEB Auditorium in Dhaka
A doa and iftar gathering was held at the auditorium of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Ramna, the capital.
The event was organized on Saturday afternoon, 14 March, through a joint initiative of the IEB Headquarters, Dhaka Centre, and ERC Dhaka.
Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher attended the event as the chief guest.
He said engineers have made significant contributions to the country’s visible development. From roads and bridges to major infrastructure projects, engineers are working day and night. He expressed hope that engineers will continue to play an important role in building a developed and sustainable Bangladesh in the future.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam attended the event as the special guest.
He said a large portion of the country’s talented students pursue careers as engineers or doctors. However, due to administrative structures, non-technical personnel are sometimes appointed to technical posts, which creates various obstacles in development activities. He emphasized ensuring the appointment of technically qualified personnel to technical positions for the sake of proper development.
State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahammad Sohel Monjur said that, like professionals in other sectors, engineers also face various limitations and challenges.
He expressed hope that the government would sincerely consider the existing problems of engineers and provide necessary solutions. To maintain the continuity of national development, he called upon engineers to work together in unity.
Member of Parliament from Narsingdi-5 constituency, Engineer Md. Ashraf Uddin (Bakul), said engineers have long faced neglect in various sectors. He stressed the need for proper recognition of engineers who were involved in past movements and struggles, and also urged consideration of issues related to engineers who lost their jobs at different times.
Convener of the Association of Engineers Bangladesh, Engineer Shahrin Islam Tuhin, said that in many specialized positions within the engineering sector, non-technical personnel are being appointed instead of expert engineers. This, he said, creates complications in implementing development projects and slows down the pace of work. He called for proper placement of engineers based on merit and qualifications.
In his presidential address, IEB President Engineer Mohammad Riaz ul Islam (Riju) said that the IEB has always been working to establish the fair rights and professional dignity of engineers. He also noted that further discussions and initiatives would be taken with the government on these matters.
In his welcome speech, Acting Honorary General Secretary of IEB Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Rasel highlighted the history of the organization. He said that the institution, established during the British period, has continued to play an important role in the professional development of engineers in the country under the new identity of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh after independence.
He further said that Engineering Staff College Bangladesh, under the IEB, is playing an important role in enhancing the professional skills of engineers.
Among others who spoke at the event were Chairman of IEB Dhaka Centre Engineer Helal Uddin Talukdar and Vice-Chairman of ERC Dhaka Engineer Khan Ataur Rahman Santu.
At the event, Vice-President (Administration and Finance) of IEB and Convener of the Organizing Committee Engineer A.T.M. Tanbir-ul Hasan (Tamal) delivered the vote of thanks. The program was moderated by Member Secretary of the Organizing Committee and Honorary Secretary of IEB Dhaka Centre Engineer K. M. Asaduzzaman.
Leaders and engineers from various levels of IEB were present at the event. Among them were IEB Vice-President (Academic and International) Engineer Khan Manjur Morshed, Vice-President (HRD) Engineer Sheikh Al Amin, Vice-President (S&W) Engineer Niaz Uddin Bhuiya, Honorary Assistant General Secretary Engineer Mohammad Mahbub Alam, Engineer Md. Nur Amin, and Engineer Sabbir Ahmed Osmani.
Also present were Vice-Chairmen of the Dhaka Centre Engineer Abdullah Al Mamun and Engineer Md. Kamrul Hasan (Ujjal), along with engineers from various divisions, chapters, and institutions under the IEB.
