AI Ambitions: OpenAI Plans GitHub Alternative Amid Service Disruptions
Artificial Intelligence (AI) research firm OpenAI is reportedly developing an alternative to Microsoft’s popular code hosting platform, GitHub, according to Reuters, citing U.S. media outlet The Information.
Sources involved with the project have indicated that frequent service disruptions on GitHub have recently hindered the work of OpenAI engineers. This issue has prompted the decision to create an independent code hosting platform.
The project is currently in its early stages and may take several more months to complete, The Information reported. OpenAI staff are also considering the possibility of offering this code repository to OpenAI’s customers commercially.
If launched, this product would mark a bold move for OpenAI, placing the company in direct competition with one of its largest investors, Microsoft.
It is noteworthy that Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion. Currently, the platform has approximately 10 million developer users.
A few days prior to this report, OpenAI secured a massive $110 billion funding round led by Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, bringing the company’s valuation to $840 billion.
Reuters has not independently verified the authenticity of this report. No immediate comments were available from OpenAI, GitHub, or Microsoft.
