Amid a severe global shortage of memory chips, leading PC manufacturers HP, Dell, Acer, and Asus are considering sourcing memory chips from Chinese manufacturers for the first time. Reuters reported the development.

A report by Nikkei Asia noted that the ongoing shortage is delaying product launches across the technology sector and significantly increasing production costs.

According to the report, the scarcity of memory chips—used in everything from smartphones to data centers—has put intense pressure on the global supply chain. In response, HP has begun trial evaluations of products from Chinese memory chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT).

After monitoring market conditions through mid-2026, HP may decide to source DRAM chips from Chinese suppliers for certain markets outside the United States.

Similarly, Dell has started assessing Chinese DRAM options amid concerns that prices may rise further.

Acer has expressed interest in using such chips through its Chinese contractors, while Asus has reportedly asked its Chinese manufacturing partners to assist in sourcing memory chips for selected notebook projects.
