As speculation around a foldable iPhone intensifies, Apple is reportedly working on another new concept. According to Bloomberg technology analyst Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based company is actively exploring the possibility of launching a square-shaped, clamshell or flip-style foldable iPhone. Gurman said the idea is currently under consideration within Apple’s internal research laboratories. The report was first published by GSMArena.

In his report, Gurman did not provide any specific timeline or technical details regarding the potential “iPhone Flip.” He also made it clear that there is no guarantee the project will ever reach the market. Instead, Apple is expected to first introduce a book-style foldable device, often referred to as the “iPhone Fold,” in order to gauge consumer response.

Rumours surrounding a flip-style foldable iPhone have been circulating for several years. Multiple reports previously suggested that Apple has at least two prototypes of such a device. At one point, speculation even indicated that Apple might release a flip-style iPhone before a book-style foldable model.

Technology analysts believe that growing competition in the foldable smartphone market is prompting Apple to prepare early by experimenting with new designs and form factors.
