Following the launch of its new AI-powered smart speaker, technology giant Google has announced the permanent discontinuation of two of its popular smart speaker models—Google Nest Mini and Google Nest Audio.

Industry analysts believe the move is part of Google's broader strategy to integrate its AI chatbot Google Gemini across its entire ecosystem of devices. As a result, the company is shifting its focus away from the five-year-old Nest speaker lineup and toward developing a new generation of Gemini-powered smart home devices.

The Nest Mini was introduced in 2019 as an upgraded successor to the original Google Home Mini, which debuted in 2017.

Despite halting production, Google has assured users that existing Nest Mini and Nest Audio devices will continue to function normally. A company spokesperson said that previously sold devices will keep receiving software updates, security patches, and customer support services.

Google also confirmed that its new “Gemini for Home” technology will remain compatible with these older smart speakers, allowing users to continue benefiting from the company’s latest AI-powered features.

The newly launched Google Home speaker is priced at US$100, matching the retail price of the outgoing Nest Audio model. However, it is significantly more expensive than the Nest Mini, which retailed for around US$50 and was often available at discounted prices.

As a result, consumers looking for an affordable entry-level smart speaker may find fewer budget-friendly options in Google’s future product lineup.
