IP Telephony Powers a New Phase of Digital Communication in Bangladesh
IP-based telephony technology has brought a fundamental transformation to voice and data communication systems worldwide. By enabling voice and video calls through Internet Protocol, communication costs have dropped significantly while service quality has improved. As a result, Internet-based telephone services—known as IPTSP (Internet Protocol Telephony Service Providers)—are expanding rapidly in Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector.
Ensuring service security, call monitoring, and quality assurance, the tele-service branded as ‘ICC Talk’ is being operated under the licensing and regulatory framework of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). In line with BTRC policy guidelines, IPTSP services are creating opportunities for a lawful and structured digital transformation of the country’s telecommunications system.
Within this regulatory framework, ICC Communication Limited has been playing a pioneering role since 2010 in developing IP telephony infrastructure, implementing enterprise voice solutions, corporate calling systems, and call center technologies. Although 18 companies have received licenses to provide such services, ICC’s tele-service unit has secured a place among the top three providers in the sector. Recently, industry veteran Md Sohel Sikder joined ICC Communication Limited as Head of IPTSP. His contribution has been significant in deploying IP telephony services for banks, financial institutions, call centers, corporate offices, and large business enterprises.
Under his supervision, the company is now expanding customer-friendly IPTSP services by leveraging modern softswitches, SIP-based calling systems, and robust network infrastructure. This has helped reduce operational costs while introducing new efficiencies in call management, reporting, and customer support systems.
Speaking about the restructuring of the service architecture, Md Sohel Sikder, Head of IPTSP at ICC Communication Limited, said:
“Proper use of technology can make communication more affordable, reliable, and sustainable. IPTSP is not just a telephone service; it is a vital component of future digital communication systems. By ensuring cost-effective and dependable connectivity, this technology is already playing an important role in ICT tele-service businesses and institutional-level telecom services. Our goal is to ensure international-standard services at the domestic level.”
He added, “With skilled leadership and well-planned initiatives at technology-driven companies like ICC Communication Limited, Bangladesh will move further ahead in IPTSP and IP-based communication services in the coming days and will be able to establish a strong position in the regional telecommunications market.”
According to telecommunications experts, the expansion of IPTSP technology is aligning Bangladesh’s communication sector with international standards and serving as an effective catalyst in achieving the vision of Digital Bangladesh. In particular, the integration of IPTSP with cloud services, data centers, and IT-managed services is laying the foundation for future smart communication systems. To further develop this sector, experts emphasize the need for public–private partnerships and business-friendly policies.
