OpenAI to Roll Out Age Detection System on ChatGPT
OpenAI is set to introduce a new age-detection system on ChatGPT worldwide, aimed at identifying whether an account belongs to a minor. The initiative is designed to proactively enhance user safety on the platform, Reuters reports.
According to OpenAI, if the model determines that a user is under the age of 18, additional safety measures will be automatically activated to restrict access to sensitive content.
The company said that users who are mistakenly identified as minors will be able to regain full access by verifying their identity through the verification service “Persona,” which requires submitting a selfie. The feature is expected to be rolled out gradually in the European Union over the coming weeks.
The move comes at a time when OpenAI is preparing to introduce an “adult mode” for verified adult users in the future. OpenAI’s Head of Applications, Fidji Simo, has indicated that the feature could be launched as early as the first quarter of 2026.
Currently, ChatGPT has around 800 million weekly active users. With the platform expanding rapidly, OpenAI views the introduction of age detection as a key step toward ensuring user safety at scale.
