The High Court has issued a rule asking why the mandatory implementation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) should not be declared illegal. The court has directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and the concerned ministry—the Posts and Telecommunications Division—to respond to the rule within the next 30 days. At the same time, the court has ordered the ministry to dispose of an application submitted by business representatives on the matter.

The order was passed on January 20 (Tuesday) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Rajik Al Jalil and Justice Anwarul Islam, following a hearing on a writ petition.

The writ petition was filed by Shamim Mollah, Senior Vice President of the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB).

Barrister Imran Siddique appeared on behalf of the writ petitioner, while Attorney General (in charge) Arshadur Rouf and Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque represented the state.
