BTRC urges to register mobile phones brought from abroad
In order to ensure digital security and curb the use of illegal mobile phones, the government is going to introduce a special registration facility for mobile handsets purchased or gifted at the individual level from abroad from January 1.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has given the opportunity to register the phone brought from abroad on its own to implement the new initiative. The registration process can be completed in 5 minutes.
On Sunday, December 28, BTRC urged mobile phone users to register easily by sending messages on their mobile phones. For this, users have to go to the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) portal. After this, the IMEI number of the mobile handset has to be added with the information related to the national identity card.
Once the registration is completed after the necessary verification, the concerned handset can be used seamlessly on all mobile networks in the country.
In this case, mobile phones brought for personal use after traveling abroad, handsets sent or gifted by expatriate relatives, previously unregistered but legally acquired mobile phone customers will be able to register easily. However, the process will be different in the case of business imports.
According to sources, the handsets brought privately from abroad have long been used unregistered, which increases the risk of national network security, hinders the detection of stolen and illegal handsets, complicates revenue management. Considering this reality, BTRC is launching this special registration facility in a limited but controlled manner.
