After spending 17 years in exile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Wednesday, December 25. Marking his homecoming, a massive public reception was held in Dhaka, drawing a huge crowd. The scale of the gathering prompted Mirakkel-famed comedian Abu Hena Rony to crack a joke that quickly drew public attention.

In the evening, Rony took to his social media account and humorously compared the turnout at the reception to the day former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power.

In a satirical Facebook post, Rony wrote, “There were even more people when we bid farewell to our leader,” a remark widely interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the events of August 5 last year.

On that day, amid a mass uprising, the then-ruling government collapsed, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was forced from office, and subsequently left the country. Large crowds were seen across Dhaka and other parts of the country at the time—an episode many believe Rony was humorously recalling through his comment.

Rony’s post went viral within moments, triggering a wave of reactions in the comments section. While some users viewed it as timely political satire, others said the joke cleverly reflected the country’s recent political realities.
