Bangladesh’s First SBE-Certified Broadcast Technologist Salauddin Selim Sets International Milestone
Bangladeshi broadcast technologist Salauddin Selim (Md. Salauddin Mia) has achieved a significant international milestone by earning the Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT) certification from the US-based Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), becoming the first Bangladeshi professional to receive this globally recognised credential.
Selim appeared for the CBT examination in the United States on November 14, 2025, and the results along with the official certification were awarded on December 13, 2025. The CBT credential is granted after successfully passing a rigorous examination conducted by SBE and is regarded as a benchmark for professional competence in broadcast technology worldwide.
A Globally Recognised Professional Certification
The CBT certification, issued by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), is one of the most prestigious technical credentials in the fields of broadcast engineering, media technology, IP-based production, transmission systems, and digital media. The certification signifies that a professional has demonstrated knowledge and technical proficiency that meet international standards.
SBE works in collaboration with global partner organisations, including the Incorporation of Eastern European Broadcast Engineers (IEEBE) in Georgia, to ensure worldwide accessibility to its certification programmes. The CBT certification is internationally valued because it is based on a comprehensive and stringent evaluation process and is administered by a highly respected professional body.
Founded in 1964, SBE is celebrating 50 years of its international certification programme in December 2025. Over the decades, thousands of professionals worldwide have advanced their careers through SBE certifications.
Exam Scope and Professional Impact
Describing the challenge of the certification, Salauddin Selim said the CBT examination is highly demanding, requiring in-depth knowledge of broadcast technology, networking, electronics, electrical systems, broadcast policy, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations. He noted that earning the certification will open new international career opportunities and allow him to officially use the Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT) title along with the SBE logo in professional communications.
A Career Spanning Over Two Decades
With more than 20 years of experience, Selim has played a pivotal role in advancing broadcast and multimedia technology in Bangladesh. He currently serves as Head of Broadcast and Information Technology at Somoy Television.
Previously, he has worked with STV US, CSB News, Desh TV, and Channel 24, and has served as a consultant for Ekushey TV, Asian TV, Nagorik TV, and Eattor TV, among others. He has led the design, workflow development, and installation of broadcast systems for multiple television channels, setting benchmarks for technical excellence in the country.
Beyond television, Selim has contributed to numerous digital media projects, IPTV platforms, and university digital transformation initiatives as a broadcast technology consultant. Notably, in 2007, he developed Bangladesh’s first IP television and IP-based live broadcast system, an achievement widely recognised by national media at the time.
A Quiet Architect of Skilled Manpower
Selim has also been instrumental in developing skilled human resources in the broadcast, multimedia, and digital media sectors. Since beginning his television career in 2005, he identified a critical shortage of local broadcast technology experts and a heavy reliance on foreign professionals. In response, he took personal initiatives to train and mentor young graduates through hands-on learning and real-world exposure.
He has assisted several universities in establishing broadcasting laboratories for media and journalism students and regularly conducts training programmes on broadcast, multimedia, and digital media technologies at universities, media organisations, and national training institutes. According to Selim, he has helped more than a thousand young professionals build sustainable careers through training and practical experience.
A Pioneer of Digital Media Transformation
Widely regarded as a pioneer of Bangladesh’s digital media transformation, Selim led early pilot projects for the digital conversion of a television channel and a print media outlet. Following their success, numerous media organisations engaged him as a consultant, leading to widespread adoption of digital platforms and the creation of substantial employment opportunities—many filled by professionals trained under his guidance.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the achievement, Selim said this certification marks his first formal international credential in a career spanning two decades. He emphasised that the recognition is not merely a personal success but a milestone for Bangladesh’s broadcast professionals, stating that the global recognition would help strengthen the country’s position in broadcast technology on the international stage.
