Bangladesh made a striking mark at the global science stage for young students at the 22nd International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO-2025) held in Sochi, Russia. Competing with participants from 25 countries, the Bangladesh team won six bronze medals. The awards were presented in a grand ceremony at a convention hall along the Black Sea coast.
The bronze medal winners are: Abrar Jahin Pathan, Class 8, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School; Bihan Pal, Class 9, Ideal School and College; Ahnaf Ahmed Sinan, Chattogram Cantonment Public College; H.M. Azizur Rahman Alif, Class 9, Golgotha English Medium School; Nashwan Haque Mahir, Class 9, Dhaka Residential Model College; and Ruffa Noor Zariah, Class 10, Jessore Police Line Secondary School.
This year, from 23 November to 1 December, Bangladesh participated in the IJSO for the first time and achieved this prestigious accomplishment.
From Russia, Bangladesh team leader and Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Association for Popularization of Science, Professor Dr. Farsim Mannan Mohammedi, said, “After rigorous preparation, we have achieved this remarkable success. We are extremely proud and delighted. We participate in these Olympiads for a better world.”
Accompanying the team as assistant leaders were Md. Rezaul Islam, Coordinator of the Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad, and Morsheda Akter Mim, Academic Coordinator. Muhammad Zakaria Pathan served as an observer.
This international Olympiad for secondary-level students involved competitions in written and practical tests in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Bangladesh has participated in the IJSO ten times, winning 15 silver and 24 bronze medals over the past decade.
The six medalists were selected through multiple rounds of competition starting in July with the 11th edition of the Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad. Online selection rounds in August and September involved about 17,000 students. Following six regional rounds, an e-Olympiad, and ten sub-district-level school Olympiads, the national round and camp held in Dhaka finalized the six-member team.
