A major power outage has caused the central server of Bangladesh Bank to go down, disrupting key services including the National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB), internet banking, and cheque clearing. The shutdown has left customers facing severe inconvenience, with interbank transactions, online payments, and various banking services experiencing significant complications.

According to Bangladesh Bank officials, the server became non-operational around 4:00 pm on Thursday, 4 December. While the issue has been confirmed, officials could not specify when services would return to normal, only stating that efforts to restore the system are underway.

Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, said, “Due to the sudden power outage and voltage fluctuations after 4:00 pm, the entire system shut down. As a result, all types of interbank transactions are currently suspended. However, our full technical team is working to resolve the issue.”

Several banks have notified customers, stating: “Due to technical issues at the Bangladesh Bank end, NPSB services are temporarily unavailable. We are working to restore the system as soon as possible. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”

Earlier, on 5 April 2023, NPSB and government payment services were also halted for seven hours due to technical glitches.
