Apple’s longtime Human Interface Design chief Alan Dye is joining Meta Platforms, the iPhone maker confirmed on Wednesday. Meta is bringing the top designer into its team amid intensifying competition to build AI-driven consumer devices, Reuters reports.

Dye will assume the role of Chief Design Officer at Meta starting 31 December. He joined Apple in 2006 and has led the Human Interface Design team since 2015. During his tenure, he played a key role in designing several flagship products, including the Vision Pro headset, iPhone X, and Apple Watch. He also oversaw major redesigns across Apple’s operating systems and apps.

Meta has long been attempting to establish a stronger foothold in the consumer hardware market beyond smart glasses. The company is currently developing AI-powered smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley. By recruiting Dye, Meta signals its ambitions to further expand its hardware lineup.

According to Bloomberg, veteran designer Stephen Lem will replace Dye at Apple. Tim Cook noted that Lem has made significant contributions to every major Apple interface since 1999.

With Silicon Valley’s AI-focused competition heating up, the race to attract top talent has also intensified. In recent months, several senior Apple executives have departed, including former operations chief Jeff Williams and AI head John Giannandrea—further highlighting the shifting landscape.
