Mobile traders across the country have begun taking a hardline stance after receiving no response from the government regarding their call for dialogue on issues surrounding the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR). As part of this protest, traders under the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB) at Jamuna Future Park announced the indefinite closure of several major mobile markets nationwide starting Tuesday, 2 December.
However, mobile phone manufacturers and distributors have said that brand and authorized shops will remain open and continue selling devices.
MBCB leaders stated that despite repeatedly urging the government to sit for discussions to resolve NEIR-related complications, no initiative has been taken. As a result, small and medium traders are facing extreme uncertainty, compelling them to shut down their shops.
According to the announcement, a human chain will be formed at 1:00 pm today (Tuesday) in front of Jamuna Future Park with shutters down. Traders present at the demonstration will review the situation and announce further programmes for Wednesday, said the organisation’s leaders.
Traders claim that inconsistencies in NEIR implementation have created major obstacles in selling legally imported phones in the market, causing losses for hundreds of shop owners. They have urged the government to intervene urgently to resolve the crisis.
The indefinite closure of mobile markets has raised concerns about widespread inconvenience for both consumers and traders. According to the traders, their movement will continue until their demands are met.
