A clash broke out between students of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) and local residents near the university campus on Tuesday evening, following an incident of harassment of a female student.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 7:30 pm at Ambottala Mor on the Jashore–Chougachha road. Both sides hurled brickbats at each other. Additional police forces were deployed to bring the situation under control.

The university administration reported that the altercation began when students protested the harassment of a female student, leading to a verbal dispute with local residents. This soon escalated into a violent confrontation. The chase and counter-chase continued for about an hour, leaving at least five students injured.

Tensions remain high at the scene, while authorities are attempting to restore order peacefully.

According to information provided by the university administration and police, a female student had gone to a photocopy shop at Ambottala Mor in the evening. The shopkeeper allegedly harassed her, prompting several students to confront and beat him. Other shopkeepers in the area then became agitated and engaged in a clash with the students. Both sides threw brickbats on the road.

After the clash, students returned to campus and set tires and benches on fire on the road in front of the main gate, staging protests. This resulted in heavy traffic congestion on the Jashore–Chougachha road. Later, police, outpost personnel, and a joint force team arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Majid said, “We initially learned that locals attacked the students. At least five students are injured. We are collecting information from doctors to determine whether anyone is critically hurt. We had to seek assistance from police, the army, and local political leaders to control the situation.”

Inspector (Investigation) Kazi Babul Hossain of Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station said, “Thanks to the intervention of law enforcement agencies, the situation is now under control. Details regarding the injured will be released later.”
