In what is being described as the largest infrastructure initiative in the history of the U.S. technology sector, OpenAI, Oracle, and Japan’s SoftBank have announced plans to construct five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across the United States. The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 23, at an event in Abilene, Texas, according to Reuters.

The project, named Stargate, will involve an estimated $500 billion investment to establish data centers with a combined capacity of 10 gigawatts. U.S. President Donald Trump has identified the development of AI-driven infrastructure as a national priority.

OpenAI confirmed that, in partnership with Oracle, three sites will be built in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and an undisclosed location in the Midwest. With SoftBank’s collaboration, two additional sites will be developed in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas.

The Stargate project is expected to generate around $400 billion in investments within the next three years and create nearly 25,000 jobs. Recently, NVIDIA announced a $100 billion investment in OpenAI and pledged to provide the necessary chips to power the initiative.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, “To realize the full potential of AI, we must build massive computing capacity.”
