IEB Condemns NESCO Engineer Threats
The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) has expressed deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest over the harassment and life-threatening incident involving Northern Electricity Supply PLC (NESCO) Assistant Engineer Md. Rokonuzzaman at his workplace.
In an official statement, the oldest national-level engineering organization noted that on Tuesday, 25 August, Engineer Rokonuzzaman, while performing his duties at NESCO’s Sales and Distribution Division-3 in Rangpur, was harassed and threatened with death by certain quarters. The IEB said this appalling incident has sparked outrage among engineers across the country.
“The role of engineers is indispensable for the country’s infrastructure, industry, engineering, and technological progress. Yet, they repeatedly face threats, harassment, and conspiracies at their workplaces. This not only affects the engineers but also severely hampers national development,” the statement added.
The IEB further warned that without ensuring workplace safety, engineers may lose motivation, and talented professionals might leave the country, creating a severe crisis for national development.
The organization demanded that those involved be brought swiftly under the law and face exemplary punishment. It also called on the government to take effective and stringent measures to ensure the safety of engineers at their workplaces.
“IEB will always remain vocal in safeguarding the dignity, rights, and security of engineers and will continue this role in the future,” the statement concluded.
