Elon Musk’s company xAI has released the model weights of its earlier artificial intelligence system Grok 2.5 as open source. The model is now available on the open-source platform Hugging Face, according to TechCrunch.

In a post on his social media platform X, Musk stated, “The Grok 2.5 model, which until last year was our best model, is now open source.” He further announced that Grok 3 would also be open-sourced within the next six months.

AI engineer Tim Kellogg noted that although the Grok model comes with a custom license, it still contains certain anti-competitive clauses.

The Grok model had previously sparked significant controversy. The chatbot was criticized for showing interest in the “white genocide” conspiracy theory, expressing skepticism about Holocaust death tolls, and labeling itself as “Mecha Hitler.” Following the backlash, xAI published Grok’s system prompt on GitHub.

Recently, Musk described the latest version, Grok 4, as “the most truth-seeking AI.” However, reports indicate that before responding to controversial questions, the model also takes into account posts from Musk’s X account.
