New strategies are increasingly integrating with emerging sub-strategies in modern defense systems. While technology has enhanced the security of the nation’s maritime boundaries, it has also introduced new risks. Against this backdrop, the “Workshop on Defense Journalism” was held on Tuesday, August 12, at the hall room of “Swapnil Sindhu” in Cox’s Bazar.

Organized by the Defense Journalists Association of Bangladesh (DJAB) with the support of the Bangladesh Navy, the workshop featured addresses from senior Navy officials and veteran journalists specializing in defense reporting.

Chaired by DJAB President Alomgir Hossain, the event began with a welcome address from DJAB General Secretary Ahmad Ullah.

Navy officers at the workshop emphasized that beyond maintaining constant surveillance over the Bay of Bengal’s maritime boundaries, the Navy—alongside the Bangladesh Army and Air Force—also operates under the “in aid to civil power” mandate, assisting in ferry disasters, natural calamities, and other emergencies across the country. They highlighted that since 2018, the Bangladesh Navy has been a three-dimensional force, conducting operations across sea, land, and air, and making notable contributions to United Nations missions. DJAB’s Research and Training Secretary, Ali Asif Shawon, presented an overview of the organization and discussed various aspects of defense journalism.

DJAB senior member and City Editor of Daily Kaler Kantho, Kazi Hafiz, noted that “workshops of this kind can significantly enhance the quality of news gathering and reporting in defense journalism.” He shared his extensive professional experience and shed light on the diverse activities of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force in UN peacekeeping missions.

DJAB Vice President Tarikul Islam Masum, Treasurer Jamal Uddin, Organizing Secretary Miraj Mizu, Joint Secretary Kazi Sohag, Office Secretary Ismail Hossain Imu, Publicity and Publication Secretary Kamal Hossain Talukdar, Sports and Cultural Secretary Sajjad Mahmud Khan, Executive Members M.M. Badsha and Arifur Rahman Rabbi, along with nearly 30 journalists based in Dhaka were also present. Many of the attendees shared their own experiences in defense-related reporting.
