BTRC Bids to Balance SIM Usage: Users Advised to Deregister Extras by October 30
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has instructed mobile users with more than 10 SIM cards registered under their name to deregister the excess connections through their respective operators by October 30.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 31, BTRC warned subscribers, stating, “If a person has more than 10 SIM cards registered under their name, they must deregister the additional SIMs through the respective operators by October 30. Dial *16001# to check the number of registered SIMs under your name.”
According to BTRC guidelines, a single individual is legally permitted to have a maximum of 10 SIM cards. Any additional SIMs beyond this limit will be considered illegal and may be deactivated at any time.
The regulatory body clarified that this directive is part of efforts to curb the use of illegal SIMs, prevent cybercrime, and ensure national security. It urged all mobile users to voluntarily verify and deactivate any unnecessary or surplus SIMs within the stipulated deadline.
Failure to comply may result in legal complications, the commission warned. To make the verification process easier, users can simply dial *16001# to receive an SMS listing all SIM cards registered under their national ID.
