JUST Hosts National Seminar on Chemical Safety and Lab Management

The Department of Chemistry at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) organized its first National Seminar and Training on Chemical Safety and Laboratory Management, focusing on chemical safety, hazardous waste management, lab risk assessment, fire prevention systems, and emergency response.

The daylong event was inaugurated on Tuesday, July 22, at 10:00 AM at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery in the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. Vice Chancellor of JUST, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, formally opened the seminar.

The event began with a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of the tragic military aircraft crash involving an F-7 BGI fighter jet at Milestone School and College in Diabari, Uttara, Dhaka.

Expressing his condolences during the opening ceremony, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid said, “The loss of students, guardians, teachers, staff, and air force personnel in the Milestone School and College tragedy is irreparable. It is a moment of deep sorrow for the entire nation. I pray for the departed souls and the swift recovery of the injured. On behalf of the JUST family, I extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all affected.”

Addressing the students, he emphasized the importance of the seminar: “Today’s topic is crucial for all researchers and students. When working in laboratories, understanding chemical safety is essential. Chemistry surrounds everything in our lives—it is unimaginable to function without it. This knowledge is vital for everyone, and I hope you will use the insights gained today to grow your expertise and apply them in your future careers.”

Keynote speakers included Professor Dr. Mohammad Abu Yusuf of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Sabur of Jahangirnagar University, and Debashish Roy, Assistant Manager at Square Fashions Ltd. The speakers delivered research-backed presentations on chemical safety, hazardous waste management, laboratory risk analysis, fire safety protocols, and emergency preparedness.

At 2:30 PM, the “Training on Chemical Safety and Laboratory Management” workshop commenced, led by Associate Professor Dr. K.M. Anis-Ul-Haque of the Chemistry Department and Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Alauddin of the Department of Nutrition and Food Technology. Students from various departments, including Chemistry, actively participated.

The event concluded at 4:30 PM with the distribution of participation certificates.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Md. Korban Ali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Seminar Convener, and Chairman of the Department of Chemistry. Other speakers included Dr. Md. Amzad Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Science and Technology; and Professor Dr. Shirin Nigar, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology. Faculty members and students from the Department of Chemistry were in attendance. The event was moderated by Chemistry students Zowardar Jim and Anni Afrin.
