WhatsApp’s AI-Driven Summary Feature Debuts with Privacy at the Core

WhatsApp is rolling out a new AI-powered feature that provides summaries of unread messages for users. According to a report by TechCrunch, this optional feature is only visible to the user and will not be accessible to other participants in the chat.

Meta clarified that the feature uses its “Private Processing” technology to generate summaries, emphasizing that “neither WhatsApp nor Meta reads or stores any messages” in the process.

The feature is currently being tested in English for users in the United States, with plans to expand to more languages and countries by the end of the year.

Users can activate or deactivate the feature via Settings > Chats > Private Processing. In addition to message summaries, it will also provide writing suggestions and other assistance—while maintaining full end-to-end privacy.
