US President Donald Trump has purchased shares in SpaceX, the space research and technology company founded by Elon Musk. According to a recently released government financial disclosure, Trump completed the share purchase in June. The investment gives the US president a direct financial stake in a major government contractor associated with his former adviser, Musk.

According to the disclosure, Trump purchased SpaceX shares worth between $15,001 and $50,000 on June 23. He signed the relevant document on August 12, and it was made public on August 22. The SpaceX purchase was among more than 1,000 stock transactions Trump made during June.

SpaceX, meanwhile, completed what was described as the largest initial public offering (IPO) in US history after listing its shares on June 12. The move valued the space, artificial intelligence and satellite services company at $1.77 trillion.

Conflict-of-Interest Concerns

News of the president’s investment has prompted discussion over a possible conflict of interest, as the Trump administration is regularly making policy decisions that could directly affect SpaceX’s business prospects.

SpaceX is a major contractor for the US military and regularly depends on various government approvals. In addition, Trump recently ordered a dramatic increase in the number of commercial rocket launches in the United States, an area in which SpaceX is a major and influential player.

However, White House spokesperson Davis Engle said in a statement that the president’s investment portfolio is managed independently by a third-party financial institution. The institution primarily manages investments by following recognised indexes such as the ‘Schwab 1000’.

He further clarified that neither President Trump nor any member of his family has any ability to influence the management of the investments or decide when particular shares are bought or sold.

Other Trump Officials Also Linked Financially to Musk’s Companies

President Trump is not the only senior member of his administration with financial ties to Musk’s companies. Kelly Loeffler, head of the US Small Business Administration and a member of Trump’s Cabinet, reportedly made substantial profits from SpaceX’s IPO.

She had initially invested in xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence and social media company, which was later merged with SpaceX.

Under US regulations, financial disclosures specify assets within particular value ranges rather than stating their exact values. As a result, it is not possible to determine the precise amount of Trump’s SpaceX investment with complete accuracy.
