YouTube Downloads: What Users Can and Cannot Do

YouTube, the world’s most popular video-sharing platform, has introduced various features for users’ convenience, such as “Jump Ahead” and the ability to view comments at specific points in a video. However, like other platforms, YouTube does not provide a legal option to directly download videos to a gallery or a computer drive. Saving or collecting content without the explicit permission of the video’s copyright holder or YouTube violates the platform’s terms of service.

To allow subscribers to watch videos offline, the service has introduced “YouTube Premium.” Videos can be downloaded through the Premium and Premium Lite services on computers and mobile apps, although the Lite version does not allow users to save Shorts or music.

However, a major limitation of this feature is that the downloaded file is not stored on the device as an ordinary video file. It can only be saved within the YouTube app, making it impossible to use the content later with other video-editing software.

Beyond this, videos saved under the Premium service remain tied entirely to a specific device. Even when using the same account, a video downloaded on one device does not automatically become available on another. In addition, if the account is not verified through an internet connection at least once every 29 days, the saved files can no longer be played offline.

Various third-party websites offer ways to download videos online, but most of them are riddled with harmful spyware or malware. Under YouTube’s policies, directly downloading or screen-recording videos without permission is strictly prohibited. As a result, using someone else’s content to create a new compilation or video can be legally complicated and risky.
