Meta Moves Toward Superintelligence With New AI Lab Led by Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang
Tech giant Meta is launching a new artificial intelligence research lab under the leadership of Scale AI founder and CEO Alexander Wang. According to a report by U.S. business publication Bloomberg, Meta—the parent company of Facebook—has already completed discussions to invest over $10 billion in Scale AI. The announcement of the new AI lab pushed Meta’s stock price up by nearly one percent on Tuesday.
The New York Times reports that the new research initiative will focus on developing AI based on the concept of "superintelligence"—a theoretical system expected to surpass even human intelligence.
Meanwhile, CNBC notes that Meta plans to spend up to $65 billion this year on AI infrastructure. However, both Meta and Scale AI have declined to comment on the developments.
Alexander Wang founded Scale AI at the age of 19. Today, the company plays a key role in the AI industry by providing the data infrastructure necessary to train large language models. Wang’s potential involvement in the new lab is expected to significantly influence Meta’s AI ambitions.
To attract top-tier AI researchers, Meta is reportedly offering highly competitive compensation packages for roles in the new lab.
