Mexico Moves Against Map Mislabeling: Files Lawsuit Over 'Gulf of America'

The Mexican government has filed a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on its U.S. maps. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the legal action at a recent press conference, though she did not specify when or where the case was filed, Engadget reports.

Sheinbaum stated, “The Trump administration’s directive applies only to the U.S. portion, not the entire gulf. We only want the U.S. government’s declaration to be applied properly.”

Google made the change in February, saying the renaming was done “out of respect for local naming conventions.” While U.S.-based users now see the body of water labeled as “Gulf of America,” users in other countries continue to view it as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

According to a BBC report, the Mexican government initially requested Google to reconsider the decision and later issued a legal threat when no action was taken. Mexico continues to officially refer to the body of water as the “Gulf of Mexico.”
