Temporary Transit Tweak: Motorcycles and CNGs Allowed on Expressway for Khaleda Zia’s Return

To minimize traffic congestion on the occasion of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s return to the country, authorities have temporarily permitted motorcycles and CNG-run auto-rickshaws to use the Dhaka Elevated Expressway on Tuesday, May 6.
As per an official circular signed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali on Monday, May 5, the decision allows motorcycles and CNGs to access the expressway between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM upon payment of the prescribed toll, similar to other vehicles.
The notification stated that the Elevated Expressway authority granted this temporary permission in response to a DMP request, on the condition that vehicles maintain a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h and use the left-side safe lane of the expressway.
It further warned that failure to comply with the specified speed limit or lane discipline would result in penalties for violators. “To prevent accidents on the Elevated Expressway, adequate traffic police will be deployed to enforce laws against overspeeding and lane violations,” the circular added.
Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on Tuesday morning via a special air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar, following four months of advanced medical treatment in London. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arranged maximum security for her return and issued specific guidelines for the party leaders and supporters gathering to welcome the former prime minister, who will be accompanied by her two daughters-in-law.
