Alibaba Unveils AI Model for Video and Image Generation

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has launched its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Wan 2.1, designed for generating videos and images. The development is expected to further intensify competition in the AI sector, according to Reuters.
On Wednesday, Alibaba announced that the new model is open-source, allowing public access. Wan 2.1 is capable of generating videos and images from text and images. The model has been released in four versions—TTV-1.3B, TTV-14B, ITV-14B-720P, and ITV-14B-480P—with the "14B" versions processing up to 14 billion parameters for more precise results.
Alibaba’s initiative aligns with previous efforts by DeepSeek, which made headlines for releasing cost-effective, open-source AI models, attracting significant interest from tech investors. Currently, Wan 2.1 is available on Alibaba Cloud's ModelScope and Hugging Face platforms for both research and commercial use.
Additionally, Alibaba has previewed its new reasoning model, QWQ-Max, which is expected to be open-sourced in the near future. The company also announced plans to invest 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) over the next three years in cloud computing and AI infrastructure development.
