Huawei Set to Reenter Smartphone Market with 5G Launch in Bangladesh

Global technology brand Huawei is making a comeback in the smartphone market, selecting Bangladesh as the launchpad for its upcoming 5G phone, expected to debut either by mid-2024 or early next year. The Chinese company envisions expanding its cloud computing, energy solutions, and next-generation smart technologies from Bangladesh to the broader South Asian market. To support this initiative, Huawei has established its South Asia headquarters in Bangladesh and is focusing on developing local talent through research and innovation programs.

As part of its research and development (R&D) drive, Huawei has set up the country's only Digital Power Lab at United International University (UIU), dedicated to energy generation research.

Speaking at an event with telecom and IT journalists on Wednesday at a resort in Gazipur, Lin Hall Haven, Huawei’s Director for South Asia, elaborated on the company’s future strategy.

Addressing the challenges Huawei has faced amid political transitions, Haven stated, "Business is currently slow, but the government is not a determining factor. We sustain ourselves through the strength of our projects. Once stability returns, we will regain momentum."

When asked about Starlink's expansion, Haven explained that its connectivity model relies on existing network infrastructure for ground-based connections, making standalone Starlink services less viable in terms of cost and affordability. He also emphasized security concerns regarding foreign satellite networks providing direct connectivity within another country.

Tanvir Ahmed Mithun, Head of Media, Huawei South Asia, and Alisha Shrestha, Media and Marketing Manager, Huawei Nepal, were also present at the event.
