Letter for cancellation of 179 online news portals sent
Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hassan Mahmud said that several online news portals were being shut down on charges of spreading false news, spreading rumors and immoral activities.
The minister made the remarks in response to a question from Chittagong-11 MP M Abdul Latif during a question-and-answer session of the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.
The Information Minister said that a letter has been sent to the Department of Posts and Telecommunications to close the links with the cancellation of domain allocation of 189 online news portals on the basis of information provided by the government's intelligence agencies and activities that spread confusion in the minds of the people as directed by the High Court. Several other online news portals have also been shut down for spreading false news, spreading rumors and engaging in immoral activities.
Dr. Hasan Mahmud informed that at present the number of daily, weekly and monthly newspapers published from Dhaka district is 1126. Of these, 499 are daily newspapers, 345 are weekly and 282 are monthly.
