Alibaba Unveils Qwen 2.5-Max Amid Intensifying AI Rivalry

Chinese tech giant Alibaba introduced its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, Qwen 2.5-Max, on Wednesday, claiming it outperforms top AI models, including Deepseek-V3. The announcement, made on the first day of the Lunar New Year, underscores the growing competitive pressure Deepseek’s rise has placed not only on the global tech market but also within China’s domestic AI landscape, Reuters reports.

Alibaba’s cloud unit stated that Qwen 2.5-Max surpasses GPT-4o, Deepseek-V3, and LLaMA-3.1-405B across various benchmarks. Notably, Deepseek’s AI assistant, launched on January 10, has already sent shockwaves through the global tech industry. Within just three weeks, its emergence has cast doubts over major U.S. AI firms’ investment strategies and triggered significant losses in the tech stock market.

Deepseek’s rapid ascent has intensified competition among Chinese AI firms. On January 22, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, unveiled its own advanced AI model, which it claims outperforms OpenAI’s O1 model.

Analysts suggest that Chinese tech companies are continuously rolling out cutting-edge AI models to solidify their dominance in the sector, a trend that is expected to make the AI market even more dynamic in the future.
