Tragedy Prompts Postponement Of Semester Exams
SUST Student Dies In Motorbike Crash
- Loss of vehicular control over speed breaker leads to fatal head trauma against road divider
- Deceased student identified as first-year physics undergraduate Sadman Rahman
- University authorities suspend ongoing semester examinations across two departments
A first-year undergraduate student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was tragically killed in a late-night motorcycle collision near the campus gateway. The incident occurred around 12:15 AM on Saturday night (10 October) in front of the Topoban residential sector along the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway, confirmed Mujahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Jalalabad Police Station under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
The deceased was identified as Sadman Rahman, an undergraduate student in the Department of Physics for the 2025-26 academic session. Hailing from Madhyabhavanipur in Rajbari district, Sadman had been residing in student housing accommodations in Tilargaon, adjacent to the university's Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall.
According to classmates, Sadman was riding toward the Madina Market area after gathering with peers near the university main gate. His motorcycle lost operational control upon encountering a roadway speed breaker, causing him to crash violently into the central concrete median divider and sustain severe cerebral trauma. Bystanders rushed him to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the attending medical team pronounced him dead on arrival.
The sudden demise triggered profound mourning across the university community. Head of the Physics Department Abdul Hannan announced that an examination of the 2021-22 academic session scheduled for Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM was immediately postponed. Additionally, because the peer accompanying the hearse to Rajbari belonged to the Department of Food Engineering and Tea Technology, a first-semester evaluation within that department was likewise suspended.
University Proctor Mokhlesur Rahman noted that excessive velocity when negotiating the speed bump likely triggered the fatal ejection. Following discussions with the Additional District Magistrate, administrative clearances were secured to release the deceased to his family without an autopsy.
Jalalabad Police Station OC Mujahidul Islam stated that law enforcement officers inspected the accident site and conducted the formal inquest report at the hospital, confirming the primary finding that the student lost directional control over the speed breaker before impacting the road divider.
