BUBT Economics Olympiad Inspires Future Economists

Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) has launched the ‘BUBT Economics Olympiad 2026’ to help develop the country’s future economists, policymakers and researchers.

The inter-college competition was inaugurated on Saturday at the university’s permanent campus by BUBT Vice-Chancellor Dr. A B M Shawkat Ali. A total of 264 students from more than 35 colleges across Dhaka and other regions participated in the event.

The competition featured topics including financial literacy, data analysis, microeconomics, macroeconomics, national budget analysis, environmental economics and contemporary economic issues.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Shawkat Ali emphasized the importance of combining economics education with knowledge in artificial intelligence and data science to prepare globally competitive graduates and future economic leaders.

Special guest Dr. Mustafa K Mujeri highlighted the importance of developing skilled human resources to ensure inclusive growth and called for market-aligned policy measures to address inflation.

Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics Dr. Syed Masud Hossain said the Olympiad is more than a competition—it is a national platform for developing analytical thinking and economic leadership among young learners.

Session Chair Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan described the initiative as timely and relevant.

One of the highlights of the day-long event was a special session titled ‘Learning the National Budget Easily’, which attracted strong interest from participants. The keynote paper was presented by Dr. Muhammad Mahbub Ali, while Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf attended as chief guest.

Students competed in both individual and team categories. Selected participants advanced to the final round featuring rapid economic quizzes and expert-panel interactions.

Awards were presented separately in Arts, Commerce and Science categories. Winners will receive trophies, certificates and scholarships of up to 50 percent for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Economics at BUBT. All participants also received certificates.
