Emergency Faculty Meeting Adopts Resolutions
CUET Teachers Seek In-House Engineering Leadership
- Association proposes appointing VC from internal senior engineering faculty if reinstatement fails
- Ongoing complete work abstention leads to postponement of key engineering examinations
- Stakeholders seek state intervention to restore academic research and campus operations
To preserve institutional stability and specialized technical education at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), the teachers' association adopted a revised strategic stance on the appointment of its top administrator. During an emergency general meeting held at the university's central auditorium on 08 October, Thursday, at 10:30 AM, faculty members resolved to seek the appointment of a Vice Chancellor from among its own engineering academicians if their primary demand is unfulfilled.
Presided over by association president Dr. Mohammad Ahsan Ullah and moderated by general secretary Dr. Md. Abul Hasan, the meeting unanimously approved three critical decisions, including the continuation of their full work abstention. While both leaders could not be reached via telephone, an academic dean stated under anonymity that faculty members remain focused on the reinstatement of former Vice Chancellor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem. However, if the administration rejects this plea, they demand that the replacement be selected strictly from the 26 Grade-1 professors serving within the university.
Institutional sources indicate that widespread unrest began on 21 September, when authorities replaced Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem by appointing Prof. Sheikh Shariful Alam from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). A student-led shutdown commenced on 22 September, featuring demonstration rallies, open sit-ins, signature campaigns, torch marches, red card protests, artistic graffiti, masked marches, and protest musical events.
The 17-day operational impasse has caused the postponement of 25 to 30 academic examinations across various specialized engineering departments. Several departments have completed course curricula but cannot administer final evaluations. In response, both students and educators have urged swift administrative intervention to normalize the learning environment and resume critical technological education.
