OpenAI has introduced two new shopping features globally to its AI-powered assistant, ChatGPT, aiming to make online shopping easier and more modern. The most notable of the two is Virtual Try-On, which allows users to upload a photo or selfie and see how a particular piece of clothing or accessory might look on them.

The feature can be accessed by clicking the new Try On button in ChatGPT’s shopping results or by uploading a screenshot of any preferred clothing item.

In addition, a Favorites option has been added, allowing users to organize products they like in a digital library for viewing later.

Image 2.5 Model and Other Features

OpenAI said the new features are powered by its recently unveiled ChatGPT Image 2.5 model. The advanced AI model can accurately reproduce natural lighting, shadows and fabric textures in images while also generating images quickly.

Beyond trying on clothes virtually, users can describe a particular fashion style and search for a complete outfit based on that description. They can even upload a photo of an outfit worn by a favourite celebrity and use ChatGPT to find where the same or similar items are available for purchase online.

Strategic Context and Market Competition

After its earlier attempt to introduce direct, rapid payments or instant checkout failed, OpenAI has adopted this new strategy of deploying its AI assistant in the e-commerce sector.

Although Google and Pinterest have long dominated fashion discovery and e-commerce, ChatGPT’s entry into the space is expected to add a new dimension to competition in the market.

However, Google already offers a similar try-on service, so it remains to be seen how popular ChatGPT’s new initiative becomes among users.
