Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to Operate Under Skydance Following Merger
Two established Hollywood entertainment giants, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, are set to merge and operate all their activities under the name Skydance. Paramount CEO David Ellison confirmed the development in an announcement on Friday.
Skydance is primarily Ellison’s own film production company. The historic commercial deal, valued at approximately $110 billion, is expected to be formally completed on October 6.
Through the merger, streaming platforms such as Paramount+ and HBO Max, along with globally renowned television networks including CNN, CBS, MTV and Comedy Central, will come under one corporate umbrella.
Franchises and Legal Battle
As a result of the deal, Skydance will gain unified control over globally renowned blockbuster franchises such as The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, the DC Universe and Yellowstone.
However, the merger process has been marked by considerable drama and a lengthy legal battle. Netflix had previously sought to acquire Warner Bros.’ studio business, but Paramount’s full-scale offer eventually moved forward.
Twelve US states filed lawsuits against the deal, alleging that it would reduce competition in the market and harm the interests of consumers and employees. Earlier this week, a US court approved a settlement involving the states’ attorneys general, clearing the way for the merger’s final legal steps.
Brand Heritage and Future Plans
David Ellison said that despite adopting a new corporate identity, the distinct identities of Paramount and Warner Bros. would be preserved.
In a post on X, he said the company had no intention of diminishing the stature of either historically acclaimed studio.
The name Skydance will give the combined company a distinctive and powerful corporate identity on the international stage, while the two original studios will retain their own creative identities and continue to play leading roles in the global entertainment market.
