Bilibili Eyes Global Expansion with Major Platform Overhaul
China’s popular video-sharing platform Bilibili, often described as the country’s ‘YouTube’, has launched a new initiative to expand its influence in global markets. The company is undergoing a major restructuring aimed at attracting international audiences and bringing world-class content creators to its platform.
According to a report by US media outlet Semafor, Bilibili has relaunched its app on Android to make it more accessible to international users, while an iOS version is expected to arrive soon. At the same time, the company is developing a full English-language version of its website to make it easier for creators from other countries to upload videos.
Relaxed Rules and New Features
One of the biggest changes in Bilibili’s push into international markets concerns account verification or identity verification. Until now, users outside China who wanted to post videos were required to submit a passport or another government-issued identification document.
The new international app has completely removed this requirement. From now on, content from inside and outside China will be displayed together on the app.
To connect content creators and audiences from around the world, Bilibili is also appointing regional representatives in cities including Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul and Tokyo.
Political Pressure and the Challenge of Global Competition
Bilibili’s rapid global expansion has sparked fresh discussion in the technology market. Chinese video platform TikTok previously faced intense scrutiny in the United States over national security concerns, followed by legal pressure to sell its US business. This has raised questions about whether Bilibili could face a similar situation if it becomes sufficiently popular in international markets.
However, if Bilibili succeeds in attracting international YouTubers amid competition from YouTube and Netflix in the video and podcast space, the move could bring significant changes to the global video-sharing market.
