Stakeholders called for urgent action to strengthen information integrity, public trust, and social cohesion against growing AI-driven disinformation challenges. On Tuesday (18 August), Postal, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahtab Anam made this call as the chief guest at a policy dialogue titled "Information Integrity and Social Cohesion in Bangladesh: Policy, Platform Accountability and Collective Action" held in Dhaka. The dialogue was organized by UNDP Bangladesh alongside partners, with support from the German Government.

In his address, Minister Faqir Mahtab Anam stated, "Bangladesh's rapid digital transformation has created new opportunities for citizens in accessing information, communication, education, business, and government services. However, ensuring reliable, credible, and accurate information is critical to building a trust-based, inclusive, and stable digital information ecosystem. Preserving information integrity is not limited to countering disinformation; it directly relates to public trust, social cohesion, and meaningful citizen participation. Responsible journalism across traditional and digital media remains crucial, as harmful and intentional content severely impacts society, especially children and youth. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the present government is committed to building a safe, inclusive, and trust-based digital environment."

The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam noted, "In this era of rapid technological progress, verification, credibility, and accuracy are indispensable for good governance and public trust. While social media expanded freedom of expression, it also heightened the risk of rapid disinformation spread. The duty to verify information before publication is more vital for journalists today than ever. The Daily Star remains committed to ethical journalism while strengthening fact-checking operations to address emerging challenges."

A recent analysis presented by UNDP Bangladesh revealed that over half of the reviewed online content contained false or misleading information, with over one-fifth showing AI-manipulation. Officials and experts from the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC), National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), BTRC, Bangladesh Police, UNESCO, UNFPA, and The Asia Foundation participated in the dialogue.
