Why Are Removable Batteries Returning to Smartphones?

Once upon a time, opening the back cover of a smartphone and replacing the battery with a fingernail was perfectly normal. But as slim and premium designs became increasingly popular, this feature gradually disappeared. In most modern phones, batteries are permanently attached to the internal components. However, new regulations and growing environmental awareness are now bringing this old feature back in a new form.

Why Removable Batteries Disappeared

The growing consumer preference for slim phones, along with the use of premium metal and glass bodies, was a major reason removable batteries declined. Repeatedly opening a glass back cover can be risky. In addition, to protect devices from water and dust and achieve ratings such as IP68, most brands opted to make phones completely sealed.

Another factor was business-related: when batteries could not be replaced, consumers were more likely to purchase new phones sooner, which was beneficial for manufacturers. However, some rugged phones and environmentally friendly devices have continued to offer replaceable batteries.

New European Union Regulations

The situation is beginning to change because of a new European Union regulation. From February 2027, all smartphones and tablets sold in the European market will be required to have batteries that ordinary users can easily replace.

The main objectives of the regulation are to reduce electronic waste, encourage the recycling of valuable minerals and extend the lifespan of devices. Just as the adoption of USB-C has influenced smartphone design worldwide, manufacturers may bring back this design across their global smartphone lineups.

How Much Will the Design Change?

Under the regulation, “easily replaceable” means that users should be able to remove the battery using commonly available tools, such as an ordinary screwdriver. No heat or special chemicals should be required to loosen adhesive.

However, brands may receive special exemptions for flagship or premium phones if the batteries offer greater durability and the devices provide advanced water-resistance features, with battery replacement carried out by professional repair technicians.

As a result, the backs of all smartphones may not suddenly become removable in the old-fashioned way. However, over the coming years, replacing a smartphone battery is likely to become considerably easier than it is today.
