Restart to Refresh: Myths and Benefits of Restarting Smartphones

It is a common belief that smartphones become sluggish if left running for extended periods or that they should be restarted every day. However, thanks to advancements in modern mobile operating systems, regularly powering a phone off and on is no longer a necessity. That said, restarting a device periodically still offers several important benefits, particularly in terms of performance and security.

Performance Benefits and Cache Management

Both Android and iOS devices are designed to remain operational for weeks without requiring a restart. To speed up app launches and improve responsiveness, smartphones automatically store temporary files in cache memory.

Over time, however, memory management can become less efficient, occasionally leading to issues such as app crashes, increased battery consumption, or sluggish performance. Restarting the device clears unnecessary temporary data from RAM, allowing the operating system to start fresh and often improving overall responsiveness. These performance improvements tend to be more noticeable on Android devices than on iPhones.

Cybersecurity and the BFU State

Many users believe that simply restarting a smartphone provides complete protection against cyberattacks. In reality, rebooting can temporarily disrupt certain advanced attacks, such as spear-phishing campaigns or zero-click malware, because malicious code stored only in memory is removed when the device powers down. However, determined attackers may attempt to compromise the device again after it restarts.

The more significant security benefit lies in what is known as the Before First Unlock (BFU) state. After a phone is restarted, all user data remains fully encrypted until the owner unlocks the device for the first time using a passcode or PIN.

If a phone is lost or stolen while still in the BFU state, accessing the data stored on the device becomes significantly more difficult, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access.

How Often Should You Restart Your Phone?

For users who prefer a regular maintenance routine, restarting a smartphone once a week is generally sufficient.

Some smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, offer built-in features that can automatically restart the device at scheduled times. Meanwhile, certain Google Pixel devices and iPhones automatically reboot after remaining unused for approximately 72 hours as an added security measure.

If your phone feels unusually slow or experiences minor issues such as temporary network connectivity problems, manually restarting it is often the quickest and simplest solution. For everyday use, however, there is no need to restart a modern smartphone every day.
