A growing number of current ChatGPT users are turning to Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, attracted by its strong programming and coding capabilities. However, many have been reluctant to switch platforms for fear of losing years of accumulated information, preferences, and personalized memories. To address this concern, Anthropic has recently introduced a new feature called "Import Memory," allowing users to transfer their ChatGPT memories to Claude with minimal effort.

Simple Steps to Transfer Your Memories

The memory transfer process can be completed through either the Claude web interface or desktop application by following a few straightforward steps.

Users should first open Settings from their profile picture in Claude and navigate to the Memory section (or Capabilities in the updated interface). After enabling the memory feature, selecting Import Memory will display a special prompt, which should be copied.

Next, users need to open ChatGPT and ensure that the Memory feature is enabled under Personalization settings. In a new conversation, they should paste the copied prompt from Claude and submit it. ChatGPT will then generate a summary of all stored memories and preferences.

Finally, users simply copy this generated summary and paste it into Claude’s memory import box. Once submitted, the transfer process is complete.

Gemini Memories Can Be Imported Too

The feature is not limited to ChatGPT users. Anthropic says that Google Gemini users can also migrate their saved preferences and personal information. By enabling the memory option in Gemini's Personal Intelligence settings and following the same import instructions, users can transfer their personalized data to Claude.

According to Anthropic, newly imported memories may take up to 24 hours to become fully available. Once the process is complete, users can review Claude's Memory settings to verify which information has been successfully imported.
