Autonomous Cyber Defense and Agentic SOC: A New Frontier for Smart Bangladesh's Security
An exclusive interview with Engineer Md. As Bangladesh accelerates its digital transformation under the vision of Smart Bangladesh, cybersecurity has emerged as a cornerstone of national security. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and autonomous cyber defense technologies is fundamentally reshaping the global cybersecurity landscape. Against this backdrop, the concept of the Agentic Security Operations Center (Agentic SOC) is gaining widespread recognition as one of the most effective next-generation cybersecurity frameworks.
To discuss the future of cyber defense, Bangladesh's preparedness, and the strategic role of Agentic SOC in protecting critical infrastructure and law enforcement systems, DigiBanglaTech spoke with Engineer Md. Nazmul Huda Masud, Maintenance Engineer at the Special Branch of Bangladesh Police, Cyber Security Analyst (SB-CIRT), and Joint Secretary (Academic) of the Bangladesh Computer Society (BCS).
During the interview, Engineer Masud explained how Agentic SOC addresses the limitations of conventional manual cyber defense against increasingly sophisticated threats such as ransomware, zero-day exploits, and AI-driven phishing attacks. He emphasized that artificial intelligence is not designed to replace cybersecurity professionals but to significantly enhance their capabilities. He also discussed the strategic importance of deploying Agentic SOC to safeguard Bangladesh's Critical Information Infrastructure (CII), border and immigration systems, and law enforcement databases.
Question 1: What is an Agentic SOC, and how does it differ from a traditional SOC?
Engineer Nazmul: A traditional Security Operations Center (SOC) primarily depends on human security analysts to detect, investigate, and respond to cyber threats. An Agentic SOC, on the other hand, leverages AI-powered autonomous agents to perform these tasks. It goes beyond merely detecting threats by autonomously analyzing the overall security context, making informed decisions, and executing appropriate countermeasures. In simple terms, it functions like an experienced cybersecurity analyst capable of making autonomous, real-time decisions.
Question 2: Why has Agentic SOC become such a major topic globally?
Engineer Nazmul: The scale and sophistication of cyberattacks have increased dramatically. Threats such as ransomware, zero-day exploits, AI-driven phishing, and supply chain attacks unfold so rapidly that traditional manual defense mechanisms can no longer keep pace. Agentic SOC can analyze massive volumes of security logs, network traffic, and security events within seconds and respond automatically in real time.
Question 3: How important is Agentic SOC for Bangladesh?
Engineer Nazmul: Bangladesh is moving rapidly toward realizing the vision of Smart Bangladesh. Government services, financial institutions, airports, seaports, telecommunications infrastructure, and law enforcement digital systems have all become part of the country's Critical Information Infrastructure (CII). Conventional security mechanisms are no longer sufficient to protect such an extensive digital ecosystem. By implementing Agentic SOC, Bangladesh can establish a modern, highly effective cyber defense framework even with limited skilled manpower.
Question 4: How does artificial intelligence improve the effectiveness of an SOC?
Engineer Nazmul: AI can detect anomalous behavior, assess risks based on historical cyberattack data, and predict potential threats before they materialize. For example, if a user or device suddenly behaves differently from its normal pattern, AI can immediately identify the anomaly and generate an alert. AI agents can also automatically isolate compromised devices, block malicious IP addresses, or activate new security policies without requiring manual intervention.
Question 5: Will Agentic SOC replace cybersecurity professionals?
Engineer Nazmul: Absolutely not. Agentic SOC is designed to augment human capabilities, not replace them. Human expertise, judgment, and strategic decision-making remain indispensable in cybersecurity. AI is best suited to handling repetitive, complex, and time-consuming tasks, allowing human analysts to focus on strategic planning, advanced threat hunting, and sophisticated investigations.
Question 6: What are the biggest cybersecurity challenges facing Bangladesh today?
Engineer Nazmul: The major challenges include a shortage of experienced cybersecurity professionals, insufficient institutional awareness, and the absence of a fully integrated national cybersecurity framework. Furthermore, many organizations still follow a reactive security model, responding only after an attack has occurred. Today's threat landscape requires proactive and predictive security models instead.
Question 7: How significant is Agentic SOC for law enforcement agencies?
Engineer Nazmul: Law enforcement agencies handle highly sensitive national information, border data, criminal investigation files, and intelligence records. Protecting these databases is critical to national security. Agentic SOC enables continuous monitoring, rapidly detects suspicious intrusions, and helps neutralize threats before they can compromise sensitive information.
Question 8: What role can Agentic SOC play in airport and immigration management?
Engineer Nazmul: Agentic SOC, combined with AI, can integrate physical and cyber security to make border control faster, smarter, and more accurate. Biometric e-gates and facial recognition technologies can verify passports and visas within seconds, enabling fully automated immigration processing. AI agents can also analyze CCTV footage and surveillance systems in real time to detect suspicious behavior, unattended objects, or fraudulent travel documents. This significantly reduces manual errors, minimizes passenger queues, enhances operational efficiency, and facilitates real-time data sharing among law enforcement agencies, ultimately strengthening airport security.
Question 9: Zero Trust Architecture is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. How can it be integrated with Agentic SOC?
Engineer Nazmul: The core principle of Zero Trust is, "Never Trust, Always Verify." Agentic SOC serves as one of the primary enablers of Zero Trust implementation. In a Zero Trust environment, every user and every device must be continuously verified, something that is practically impossible to perform manually. AI agents within an Agentic SOC continuously analyze user behavior in the background and enforce Zero Trust policies dynamically and consistently.
Question 10: Are there privacy or ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI in Agentic SOC?
Engineer Nazmul: Yes, there are. However, if AI governance policies are properly implemented, these concerns can be effectively managed. Conventional AI generally operates according to predefined instructions, whereas Agentic AI possesses the capability to formulate plans, make decisions independently, and interact with multiple systems autonomously to accomplish assigned tasks. That level of autonomy requires robust governance, transparency, and clearly defined ethical safeguards.
Question 11: What are the biggest obstacles to implementing Agentic SOC successfully in Bangladesh, and how can they be overcome?
Engineer Nazmul: The greatest barriers are not technological; they include the shortage of skilled professionals, inadequate infrastructure, fragmented data management, the absence of clear policy frameworks, and insufficient investment. In addition, organizations often lack confidence in AI due to concerns about trust, false positives, and return on investment (ROI). These challenges can be addressed by modernizing data infrastructure, investing in workforce upskilling, and strengthening collaboration between academia and industry. With coordinated efforts in these areas, Agentic SOC can significantly improve cybersecurity across government agencies, banks, telecommunications, healthcare, and other Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) sectors.
Question 12: How do you envision the future of cybersecurity in Bangladesh?
Engineer Nazmul: I envision a secure Bangladesh where every piece of critical national information infrastructure is protected by AI-powered autonomous security systems. To build a truly Smart Bangladesh, cybersecurity must be treated as a national priority. The integrated implementation of Agentic SOC, Threat Intelligence, Zero Trust Architecture, and Cyber Resilience Frameworks will create a secure, resilient, and sustainable digital future.
