Tangail, July 8: At least 10 people, including an assistant proctor, were injured in a series of clashes among students at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) over arrangements to watch the Argentina–Egypt football match.

Although the campus remained tense until Wednesday afternoon, the situation later returned to normal.
According to university sources, the first altercation began around 10:00 pm on Tuesday before the match started over seating arrangements between students of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department and the Food Technology and Nutritional Science (FTNS) Department.

The argument soon escalated into a physical confrontation. University authorities temporarily brought the situation under control, but fresh clashes erupted after the match involving students from the ICT, FTNS and Statistics departments.

Later, students from the three departments chased one another near the university's third academic building. ICT students gathered in front of the academic building, while FTNS and Statistics students assembled near Bangabandhu Abdul Mannan Hall.

Around 1:00 am, another round of clashes broke out inside the first academic building involving students from the ICT, FTNS, Statistics and Chemistry departments. The violence continued for nearly an hour, during which windowpanes and flower pots in front of the building were vandalised. The situation was finally brought under control around 3:00 am through the intervention of the proctorial body and faculty members.

The university's proctor office said seven injured students were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital, while one critically injured student was referred to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur. Assistant Proctor Dr Abdul Quddus also sustained injuries and received primary treatment.

University Proctor Dr Monir Morshed said the clashes stemmed from a minor dispute and that the situation had been brought under control with the help of teachers and the proctorial body.

He added that the university administration would discuss the incident with the Vice-Chancellor and the students concerned before taking further action. The overall campus situation is now normal.
