Bangladesh’s insurance regulator has discussed new measures aimed at strengthening oversight, improving claims settlement and advancing digital transformation across the life insurance industry.

During a meeting with managing directors and chief executives of life insurance companies, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) reviewed sector challenges and possible reform initiatives.

Discussions covered claims processing, digital transformation, product innovation, risk-based supervision and regulatory improvements.

Industry representatives noted that delays in claims settlement at several institutions continue to affect public confidence in the broader insurance market and raised concerns over financially stressed operators.

In response to proposals for sector support mechanisms, IDRA Chair Mir Nadia Nivin said the possibility of a one-time support arrangement could be considered alongside commitments to prevent recurring structural weaknesses.

The meeting also emphasised restoring trust through timely claims payments, stronger governance and greater accountability across company leadership structures.

As part of digital transformation efforts, IDRA announced plans to introduce a real-time data-driven supervisory framework designed to improve monitoring, information management and operational transparency.

Additional discussions focused on reducing policy lapse rates, reviewing commission structures, expanding actuarial capabilities, strengthening risk management and introducing innovative insurance products including takaful models.

The regulator further indicated a gradual transition from compliance-based oversight toward a Risk-Based Supervision (RBS) framework to enable more responsive and data-informed regulation.

Separate meetings with individual insurers are expected in the coming weeks to assess operational challenges and future opportunities across the sector.
