BTRC Boosts Crackdown on Illegal Wireless Devices

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has continued its joint drives against illegal telecommunication equipment and unauthorized wireless installations in Dhaka and other parts of the country.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, June 25, BTRC said that unlicensed walkie-talkies are being seized from various organizations during the operations, while legal cases are being filed against the responsible individuals at local police stations.

According to the regulator, under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act, 2001 (Amendment-2026), obtaining spectrum allocation and a wireless equipment license from the Commission is mandatory for the use, possession, import, marketing, or operation of any type of walkie-talkie or wireless communication device.

BTRC warned that using such equipment without the required licenses constitutes a punishable offense under the law.

The Commission urged businesses, security service providers, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and all individuals and organizations to refrain from using any wireless devices or walkie-talkies without proper authorization.

BTRC further stated that enforcement operations against illegal and unlicensed wireless equipment will continue. Strict legal action will be taken against individuals or organizations found violating the law.

The regulator also called upon all stakeholders to comply with relevant laws and regulations to ensure the proper management of wireless communications in the public interest.
