Bangladesh has introduced its first cashless prison management system at Munshiganj District Jail, bringing RFID-based inmate tracking, digital accounting and cash-free purchases to improve transparency, security and prison administration.

Bangladesh has introduced its first “Cashless Prison Management” system at Munshiganj District Jail as part of efforts to modernize correctional administration through technology.

According to a press release issued by the Prison Directorate on Sunday (21 June), the system uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to identify and monitor inmates’ locations inside the prison. The technology is also being used to support inmate counting and ward-level monitoring.

Under the new framework, funds provided by inmates’ family members will be deposited virtually into individual inmate accounts. Those balances can later be used to purchase essential items from prison canteens through RFID-enabled transactions.

The Prison Directorate said the initiative eliminates cash handling inside the correctional facility, aiming to strengthen transparency, accountability and operational efficiency.

Officials added that the technology-driven approach is expected to improve prison security, simplify inmate information management and enhance service delivery standards. The launch at Munshiganj District Jail marks a new phase in Bangladesh’s digital transformation of prison administration.
